Insomnia is a condition where a person has trouble falling or staying asleep throughout the night. They also cause a person to become irritable and lack energy. Insomnia also makes a person to wake up often during the night and then have trouble in sleeping again.
Insomnia can be divided into three types namely, Transient insomnia, which is a short, term problem and lasts for less than one week, Acute insomnia remains for somewhere around a month whereas the third one that is Chronic insomnia that lasts longer than a month.
Common Causes of Insomnia:
- Stress is one of the major causes of insomnia. A person tends to lose sleep considerably if he or she is stressed out for some matter.
- Long period of night shift work may also make a person sleepless.
- Noisy surroundings
- Lack of comfort
- Travelling and jet lags
- Extreme temperatures
- Some medicines also cause insomnia, mostly anti-biotic medicines
- Depression mostly results into chronic insomnia
- Intake of alcohol and smoking just before going to bed
Common Symptoms of Insomnia:
The common complaints of people suffering are-
- They cannot fall asleep on nights or if they manage to sleep then they wake up several times during the sleep
- Sleepiness during the day or feeling of tiredness
- Not having a refreshing sleep
People who suffer from insomnia tend to worry about getting proper amount of sleep. Because they try hard to sleep they get frustrated and upset and thus it becomes harder to get sleep.
Insomnia can be treated using mental and physical measure and also medicines in some cases. Though you must remember that the sleep duration differs from person to person, thus not getting 8 hours of sleep every night doesn’t make you insomniac. Some people are fine even with 4 to 5 hrs of sleep while some need more than 8 hrs per night.
Treatment is done according to the problem diagnosed. Short term insomnia can be cured with time, like for example if it is because of jet lag or frequent travelling then it will go away with time once you come in a proper schedule. If it is caused because of some medicines then the doctor would either ask you to stop the medicines or replace them with some other medicine. According to the cause and as per the seriousness of insomnia doctors can prescribe sedatives to some. If the cause of your insomnia is change of place or a noisy surrounding then you must considering changing your room or getting it soundproofed. If you have a messy room, clean it immediately as cluttered room unknowingly increases irritability. Avoid caffeine and alcohol before going to bed.
Insomnia is a common problem and almost everyone suffer from it sometime or the other. But by understanding the symptoms and with proper prevention you can avoid being a victim of it.
