Ascites is one among the diseases that attacks birds in the poultry especially chickens and can even take place in human beings.

Ascites is generally an unusual accretion of the fluid present in the abdomen of the birds, especially in the chickens. Ascites fluid consists of the fluid in a large amount of albumin and a protein that is mainly of pale yellow color. There is no such particular amount of the symptom causes due to this disease but it all depends on the increasing in amount of symptoms.

The altitudes which are at the higher level causes a this disease in the chicken at the very rarely where as the altitude which are at the low level develop this disease. This disease can also affects in human beings. Ascites are found more in males than females.


Ascites contain swelling in the abdomen due to the excessive fluid contain, labored, gasping breathing sound and high blood pressure. Sometimes a slight bluish color appears at the comb and feet of the chicken. Chickens who suffered from this disease look smaller in the flock. In addition, they are low active with the messy feathers than other chickens. The people or chickens who suffer from ascites disease might fall prey if not cured soon. Whereas, the postmortem case has been proved that those who suffers from this disease appears enlargement of the heart valve, swelling and bleeding of the heart, liver shrunk and looks gray in color.


Ascites disease caused due to the low level of oxygen or hypoxia, this give rise to the increase in blood pressure or pulmonary hypertension. The pulmonary hypertension causes a severe damage to the heart valve and circulates the low flow of blood in the heart. Various factors add to the ascites disease in the poultry that includes cold temperature during fever, amount of oxygen decreased in the air, quick growth of populace in the small surroundings, great amount of salt in the diet etc and many other factors that leads to the ascites disease.


Preventative techniques such as tolerable control of temperature, managing sufficient growth of size, fresh air quality, lowering of the sodium present in diet and a proper amount of water feeding. All this Preventation helps to make certain changes in the size of the poultry populace and can provide a sufficient oxygen level to avoid from hypoxia.

Other animals might also suffer from this disease but these diseases are most common in poultry.
