Obesity: Snoring can be caused by the fact you have gained excess weight. The excess fat deposits around the neck and the throat can cause narrowing of the throat opening and create pressure on your airway, particularly while the person is lying down. Genetic: Snoring can be caused due to genetic trait. Lamentably your ancestors can pass on the characteristics of a smaller throat which can cause you problems in breathing properly which may leads to snoring. Treatments in such cases can be less effective.
Your gender: Snoring is common among men than women. Men tend to snore more because they have narrow airways in their body than females.
Your age: Snoring intensifies with age. As you get older the throat becomes narrower. The muscles in the throat lose toning, making the air passage narrow. So the amalgamation of weak throat muscles and narrower air passages can lead to snoring.
Alcohol: Alcohol relaxes your body which includes your throat and tongue muscles. The more these muscles relax the chances of snoring increases. Giving up the harmful habit of drinking alcohol will act as the best cure for snoring.
Use of pillows: Pillows are also another cause for snoring. The size and type of pillows leads to chances of snoring in a person. If the pillow size is larger, it increases the angle of the neck and obstructs the air passage, leading to snore. Also, if you sleep with a soft pillow, you tend to raise the angle of your neck that will obstruct your airways and cause snoring.
Cough and Cold: Most of the time lumps of mucus clog on the airways, creating infections. Due to blockage in the wind pipe and infection, a person might start snoring. Thus, care should be taken to avoid chronic nasal infection and other ailments.
Sleeping pattern: The way you sleep plays an important role in your snoring. Sleeping on your back worsens snoring. The soft tissues situated at the back of your throat and tongue often glides backward if sleeping in the above pattern, leading to blockage of your airways. The chances of snoring can be reduced if a person sleeps on his/her side.
Thus, one must be cautious enough to realize that snoring is not a simple problem and it can possibly lead to other complications such as heart attacks and strokes if left untreated.
